01 · APPEARANCE

Vertical depth changes the visual proportion of the frame

A deeper frame occupies more vertical space on the face and can create a stronger visual presence.

A shallower frame can look lighter and more streamlined.

Even with the same horizontal A dimension, a different B dimension can change the overall impression substantially.

02 · CHEEK CONTACT

A deep lower rim can interfere with the cheeks or cheekbones

People with high cheekbones or shorter facial vertical dimensions may have less clearance below the frame.

When a deep B dimension combines with short vertex distance or greater pantoscopic tilt, the lower rim may be more likely to contact the cheeks when smiling.

Bridge support and face-to-lens distance should be assessed along with lens depth.

03 · LENS WEIGHT

More lens area can increase weight

A larger lens opening generally means a larger finished lens and can increase lens weight.

With stronger prescriptions, required blank diameter, decentration and lens material also influence thickness and weight.

So the lens conditions should be considered together with the frame front.

04 · PROGRESSIVE LENS

For progressives, check real fitting height and the design minimum

Progressive lenses distribute distance, intermediate and near zones vertically within the lens.

A large B dimension does not automatically make a frame suitable; the actual fitting height in the final wearing position and the minimum fitting height of the selected progressive design need to be checked.

Modern progressive designs include short-fitting-height options, so progressives do not require a large frame in every case.

05 · FACE PROPORTION

Consider facial proportions and the actual wearing position

The same 45 mm vertical depth can look and fit differently depending on face length, pupil position and cheekbone location.

Rather than judging the number alone, check where the frame actually sits and where the lower rim falls on the face.

CAUTION

Progressive lenses do not automatically require a very deep frame

What matters is not the B dimension by itself but the fitting height available in the actual wearing position and the requirements of the chosen progressive design.
