01 · FRAME WIDTH

Is the overall frame width too narrow?

The first thing to check is the overall frame width.

Lens-size numbers alone do not tell you the actual front width.

If the front is narrower than the face, the temples may flare outward and press hard against the sides of the head.

If the temples flare markedly instead of running naturally toward the ears, the frame may be too narrow.

02 · TEMPLE THICKNESS

Thicker temples change the contact area

Plastic-frame temples are often wider and thicker than metal temples.

A larger contact area can spread pressure, but if the width is wrong the entire broad surface can keep pressing the temple area.

A local protrusion or shape mismatch can also create focal pain.

03 · ACETATE ADJUSTMENT

Acetate can be reshaped within limits

With appropriate controlled heating and fitting technique, acetate temples can often be adjusted to some degree.

Mild tightness or one-sided pressure may improve with professional fitting.

Excessive heat or force can deform or damage the frame surface, and unnecessary heat can also place stress on mounted lenses or coatings.

Avoid home adjustment with a hair dryer or hot water; have the material and structure assessed professionally.

04 · HINGE POSITION

Check hinge position together with front width

Even with the same lens size, actual wearable width changes with hinge position and the outer front shape.

If the hinge starts relatively far inward or the outer front is thick, the temple starting point may not match the face.

Check actual total width and hinge position, not just the printed size numbers.

05 · TEMPLE SPREAD

The temples may have changed shape over time

Acetate and some plastics can change slightly with heat, storage conditions and repeated use.

Pressure in storage can also make left and right temple spread different.

If a previously comfortable frame has recently begun to press, check for deformation.

06 · TEMPLE BEND

A strong ear bend can pull the front of the temple area

If the temple tip bends too strongly behind the ear, the whole temple can be pulled backward.

That force can be transmitted forward and feel like tightness at the temples.

Check behind-ear fitting instead of widening only the frame front.

07 · FRONT WEIGHT

Check whether a heavy front is being held by excessive side pressure

Thick acetate fronts or large lenses can increase front weight.

If the temples were fitted too tightly to stop slipping, side pressure can cause temple pain.

Check bridge contact, front weight and behind-ear support together.

08 · FRAME SELECTION

Sometimes frame selection matters more than fitting

Plastic frames can be adjusted to a degree, but a frame that is far too narrow may not be fully corrected by fitting.

Forcing it wider can keep stress on the hinges and front and make the shape unstable.

In that case, choosing a frame closer to the wearer’s face width may be the better solution.

CAUTION

Do not force a tight plastic frame wider at home

Acetate can be adjusted, but temperature and method matter. Excessive force or heat can damage the hinge, front or surface and permanently distort the frame. Over-widening can also make the glasses slip. Check front alignment → bridge → width → temple bend and adjust only within a safe range.
